The visual summarizes statewide proficiency results for 90,000+ schools and 18,000+ districts across the country. The proficiency levels are based on each state’s specific assessment, with percentages reflecting the share of students scoring “Proficient or Above” on their primary 2023–2024 test (released in 2024–2025). While the standards each state sets for specific proficiency levels are not comparable, this visual showcases each state's student proficiencies for ELA, Math, and Science.
When comparing student proficiency across subjects, many states had relatively consistent levels across ELA, Math, and Science. The Florida Department of Education reported ELA, Math, and Science proficiencies all within the mid-to-high 50% range. Other states, like the Maine Department of Education, reported larger differentials in proficiencies, with Maine reporting an ELA proficiency of 62.87% while its Science proficiency was reported at 34.22%. Overall, the dataset reveals meaningful differences in proficiency levels across states, underscoring diverse instructional needs nationwide.
Next month, the visual will focus on recently released proficiency assessments, administered during the 2024–25 school year and presented for the current 2025–26 school year.
